Acne is a very common skin condition, especially in the teenage years, affecting as many as three out of four teenagers.  Beneath the skin surface are tiny oil glands called sebaceous glands.  During adolescence, hormonal changes can occur which stimulate the glands to produce extra amounts of oil.  This can plug the pores and skin cells and bacteria become trapped.  Bacteria called p.acnes multiply in the plugged pores.  The plugged pores in these areas become red and inflamed and may result in the formation of pimples.

BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic therapy is a therapy for acne that does not involve a medication.  The blue light is used to kill the P. acnes bacteria in your skin which then improves the acne. BLU-U light treatments are gentle and well tolerated by patients. It involves sitting in front of the blue light for about 16 minutes.  Generally four treatment sessions are required to control your acne or clear it up for a period of time.  The treatment course may vary somewhat with the severity of the acne. BLU-U Blue light treatment is generally used alone to treat acne, however, it may be used with Levulan to treat more severe disease.  This treatment may be used alone or along with other topical and oral medications.  It can also be used in patients who prefer not to take oral antibiotics to treat their acne.  BLU-U light treatments are easy and effective.  BLU-U light treatments are approved by the FDA for the treatment of moderate acne.
